Security analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning has issued a stern warning that Ghana is under serious threat from organized drug trafficking syndicates exploiting institutional weaknesses.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on April 7, 2025, he described the country as facing a critical test, as criminal networks gauge whether Ghana can effectively combat their operations.

His concerns follow increased public scrutiny and a scheduled press conference by the opposition NPP, aimed at addressing suspicions of cocaine smuggling in the country.

Prof. Aning, referencing Ghana’s history as a “Southern hub” for drug trafficking, noted that syndicates are actively probing the nation’s ability to prevent, arrest, and dismantle such networks.

He urged President Mahama to prioritize strengthening security and law enforcement agencies, warning that the country risks becoming further entangled in transnational crime without immediate intervention.
