Declare state of emergency on galamsey – Dr. Richard Akplotsyi urges Mahama

Dr. Richard Akplotsyi is a Senior Lecturer at Ho Technical University. He has called on President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency. This is in response to the worsening crisis of illegal mining, known as galamsey.

Speaking on Ho FM's Adanu Morning Show, Dr. Akplotsyi expressed frustration. He noted the slow prosecution of those involved in illegal mining activities. He urged the President to take decisive action against this rampant destruction.

His call comes after President Mahama warned his appointees about illegal mining. The President stated that they could lose their positions if involved in galamsey.

Dr. Akplotsyi also suggested that the President should vet individuals before appointing them to government roles. This would help prevent future issues related to illegal mining activities.

He condemned a recent attack on Forestry Commission officials fighting against illegal mining. He emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and protection for these frontline officers.

Dr. Akplotsyi reiterated his appeal for swift action to protect Ghana’s environment. He stressed the importance of safeguarding water bodies, forests, and farmlands from further destruction.
