Declaring State of Emergency not an imperative in the fight against galamsey – Lands Minister

Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah explained why the government won't declare a state of emergency for illegal mining areas.

Before the 2024 elections, the National Democratic Congress and others called for this declaration. This group included Franklin Cudjoe from Imani Africa, Ken Ashigbey from the media coalition against galamsey, GUTA, and Catholic priests.

However, after 79 days in office, they have not declared an emergency.

In an interview with Channel 1 Television, Buah said they are treating the situation as urgent. He stated that they are working around the clock to address it. He emphasized that in a free society, crises should be handled without causing fear or panic.

Buah noted their progress by mentioning how they reversed seven red alerts to yellow in less than a month. He assured that these issues are of great importance and require urgent attention.

He added that President Akufo-Addo prioritizes this matter. The president wants to assure Ghanaians he is addressing the issue effectively.

Buah also mentioned they do not want to create panic by announcing curfews. He clarified there is no curfew in Ghana despite ongoing challenges. As Minister of Lands and Resources, he reassured Ghanaians that they are tackling this issue urgently and will succeed in their efforts.
