Decongestion: AMA reintroduces red line policy to restore order and promote pedestrian safety

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has reintroduced its "Red Line Policy." This policy aims to regulate trading activities on designated pavements in the city.

The initiative is part of efforts to restore order and ensure pedestrian safety. It also seeks to improve environmental sanitation in the capital.

On May 21, 2025, Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey led a team to redraw red boundary lines. This marked the official relaunch of the initiative.

During a meeting with traders and media, Mr. Allotey explained the policy's principles. He emphasized equity, fairness, and his commitment to responsible leadership.

"The red line policy is not meant to punish traders," he said. "It aims to create a more organized and safer city for everyone." He added that it supports the government's 24-hour economy agenda.

Mr. Allotey announced that the renewed exercise began on Tuesday. It will continue through various strategic interventions.

These include a rotational trading system for extended hours on certain days. The AMA will also recruit local youth for its enforcement task force.

The Mayor urged traders to cooperate with city authorities. Adhering to red line boundaries will help ensure smooth pedestrian movement and a cleaner urban environment.
