The Mayor of Accra, Michael Allotey, has made an announcement. Items seized during the decongestion exercise will be donated to the Ghana Prisons Service.
Previously, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) auctioned these items. However, that practice will now stop.
The decongestion exercise started on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. It is a joint effort by AMA and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). This initiative aims to reduce congestion and improve sanitation in Accra.
On the first day, the focus was on key areas around the AMA Head Office. These included Kinbu Road to Railways and ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Statue. Opera Square to Adabraka was also targeted due to street vending and traffic issues.
After Day 1, Mayor Allotey spoke with journalists. He emphasized that the campaign would intensify moving forward. “Tomorrow, you are not going to have it this way,” he said.
He added that all seized items would go to prison tomorrow. “Today is your lucky day,” he remarked.
Mayor Allotey stressed that this initiative is ongoing. It aims to reclaim public spaces for pedestrians and motorists alike. “This exercise is not a nine-day wonder,” he stated firmly.
The Mayor assured citizens they would continue until roads are clear.
