Decongestion exercise not a nine-day wonder – Accra Mayor

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, is committed to restoring order in the Central Business District (CBD). He emphasized that the decongestion exercise is not a temporary measure.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, May 20, he highlighted the initiative's importance. The goal is to remove all unauthorized structures and street obstructions.

“This exercise is not a nine-day wonder,” he stated. “We will be on the streets until roads are clear.” He added that they would continue their efforts in Circle and Kaneshie.

The decongestion campaign began earlier that day. It is led by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) with support from the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA). This effort aims to tackle congestion and enforce city by-laws.

The first phase focuses on areas near the AMA Head Office. Key locations include Kinbu Road, ECG Junction, and Opera Square. These areas are known for street vending and traffic issues.

City authorities believe this campaign will restore discipline in Accra. They also aim to enhance public safety through these efforts.
