Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has spearheaded a high-level intersectoral meeting aimed at tackling the alarming pollution of rivers caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The session focused on dredging silted rivers and restoring waterways disrupted by mining activities.
Dr. Boamah praised institutions like DIHOC-DENZEL, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Forestry Commission, and the Engineers Regiment for their collaborative input.
He noted that the initiative aligns with the 24-hour economy vision, offering prospects not just for environmental restoration but also for job creation through land reclamation, irrigation, and freshwater transport development.
The move forms part of a broader government agenda to safeguard natural resources, enhance water quality, and promote sustainable livelihoods in communities impacted by galamsey.
