The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has donated food supplies to the Ghana Armed Forces. This donation shows appreciation for their service and sacrifices.
The food items include 5,000 bags of rice, 6,255 bottles of cooking oil, 4,800 tins of mackerel, and 4,800 tins of tomatoes. The aim is to boost the morale of the troops. This support will help with logistical challenges in feeding military personnel.
Dr. Boamah thanked Entrepreneur and Philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama for his support in this initiative.
In another development, Parliament approved a budget of over GHC 6 billion for the Ministry of Defence. Dr. Boamah was present in Parliament with his Deputy Minister and Service Chiefs to move the motion for approval.
He expressed gratitude to the Defence, Interior, and Security Committee for their support. A significant part of this budget will help settle a GHC 275 million debt owed to food suppliers.
This debt has been accumulating since August 2023 under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration. It has caused financial strain on suppliers providing essential food items to the Armed Forces.
To improve food security within the Armed Forces, the Defence Ministry plans to introduce mechanized farming. This initiative aims to sustain military food supply and reduce inflation by increasing local production.
Dr. Boamah emphasized that the government is committed to resolving existing challenges. He assured that they will ensure the Armed Forces remain well-equipped and motivated. “We are solving problems,” he stated, “and we shall remind Ghanaians.”
