Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah announced a new collaboration. This partnership is between the Defence Ministry and the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference. The goal is to promote peace, security, and social cohesion in Ghana and the Sahel region.
The discussions took place at The Square on Monday. Dr. Boamah described them as “fruitful and progressive.”
Fr. Michael Quaicoe led the visiting delegation. He is the Director of Governance, Justice, and Peace for the Bishops’ Conference. They proposed this collaboration under the Sahel Peace Initiative (SPI). This program aims to strengthen peace across West Africa’s Sahel belt.
Dr. Boamah stated they explored ways to work together for stability. He emphasized ongoing efforts toward national and regional security.
Fr. Quaicoe highlighted the Church's commitment to peace and justice. He mentioned that they provide support through partnerships.
“The Church aims to enhance both internal and external security,” he said. He added that SPI seeks to foster partnerships for peacebuilding.
Dr. Boamah confirmed the Ministry's readiness to collaborate with religious institutions. This will help strengthen Ghana’s defence posture.
He welcomed initiatives that promote peace-building efforts. Working with faith-based organizations like the Bishops’ Conference is strategic for national security, he concluded.
