Delayed Zoomlion allowances due to govt arrears – Siaw Agyepong

Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group, addressed concerns about delayed payments. These delays affect Zoomlion workers under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA). He explained that the government is slow in releasing funds for arrears.

During a Public Accounts Committee meeting on April 23, Dr. Agyepong stated, “YEA fixes the fee, not us.” He emphasized that YEA brings in the workers, not Zoomlion. He noted that workers typically work three hours instead of the minimum four hours. This affects their pay based on the minimum wage of 258 GHS for three hours.

John Oti Bless, Chairman of the Sanitation and Water Resources Committee, announced that YEA's CEO will be summoned. This is regarding concerns over Zoomlion Ghana workers' pay.

While visiting the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, Dr. Agyepong called for reintroducing the 'Operation Clean Your Frontage Taskforce.' He believes this task force would help tackle sanitation issues in Ghana.

He argued that enforcing sanitation by-laws through this task force would support waste management efforts like those of Zoomlion Ghana. Dr. Agyepong stressed that without these by-laws, waste management services cannot be fully effective.

“I’m pleading for this task force,” he said. He pointed out that during rainstorms, people often dump waste outside their homes. Countries like Rwanda and Singapore have strict by-laws to manage waste effectively.

“We have the capacity and equipment,” he added, “but we lack a task force.”
