Former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has raised security concerns over the government’s decision to deploy unarmed water guards to illegal mining sites under the Blue Water Initiative.
The initiative, a key part of the Reset Ghana Agenda, aims to combat water pollution by training and deploying 2,000 personnel to monitor and report illegal mining activities.
However, speaking during the 2025 budget debate in Parliament on March 19, Nitiwul cautioned that illegal miners, often armed, could pose a serious threat to the safety of the personnel.
“If these water guards are unarmed, how will they confront illegal miners who are armed?” he questioned, warning that the initiative could escalate into a larger security issue if not carefully implemented.
