Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has expressed concerns about business politicisation in Ghana. He called for a fair and transparent environment for all entrepreneurs, regardless of political affiliations.
His comments follow scrutiny of fintech company Hubtel. The company faces allegations of political favoritism and questionable state contracts.
At Hubtel’s 20th anniversary celebration in Accra, Dr. Ayine warned against labeling businesses by their political leanings.
"We need to depoliticise business in this country," he said. "We must support businesses to grow. There are no NDC or MPP businesses—only Ghanaian businesses."
Hubtel is accused of having ties to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. It allegedly received a $25 million payment from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for app development, which the company denies.
Minister for Communications and Digitalisation Sam George also spoke at the event. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to an inclusive digital transformation agenda.
"As Minister, I will support any Ghanaian business driving innovation," he stated. "This support is irrespective of your political color—blue, green, red, or whatever."
He added that President John Dramani Mahama envisions a digitally inclusive Ghana. The goal is to build a nation where technology enhances every sector: health, agriculture, education, and finance.
Co-founder of Hubtel Alex Bram reflected on the company's journey and resilience. He noted that their preparedness met opportunities that led to new SMS billing innovations.
As discussions continue about digital service procurement transparency, the government insists building an inclusive digital infrastructure remains a priority.
