Franklin Cudjoe from IMANI Africa believes Interior Minister Mubarak Muntaka may have been influenced by a recent incident. A foreigner reportedly died while in custody, which could have affected his decision to deport foreign nationals arrested for illegal mining in Ghana.
Cudjoe expressed on Facebook that there should not be different rules for Ghanaians and foreigners. He questioned why foreigners caught engaging in illegal mining, or "Galamsey," are deported instead of jailed.
He asked which law mandates immediate deportation for these cases. He emphasized that laws should apply equally to everyone.
Cudjoe recalled an incident where a Chinese illegal miner died while awaiting court. The police informed the judge that the miner was cremated, and his ashes were spread over the forest.
This situation may have influenced the minister's choice to deport rather than prosecute. Is this really a good idea?
