Deputy A-G condemns MP’s alleged abuse of parliamentary privilege

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Srem Sai has criticized Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. Afenyo-Markin is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu Constituency. He allegedly abused parliamentary privilege by making false statements.

In a statement, Justice Srem Sai explained that the Constitution grants MPs immunity from defamation suits. This immunity promotes good-faith parliamentary debate. However, it does not protect falsehoods meant to create public disaffection.

"Sadly, an MP has chosen to abuse this protection," he said. He accused Afenyo-Markin of spreading malicious falsehoods in Parliament. This behavior creates public disaffection and undermines constitutional protection.

His comments follow allegations about the search of Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence. The Deputy AG clarified that Dr. Addison had legal representation during the search. He stated that the search was conducted with court authorization.

Justice Srem Sai stressed the importance of addressing abuses of parliamentary privilege. He believes this is essential to protect Ghana’s democracy and its integrity.
