Deputy Minority Leader raises alarm over judicial independence and diplomatic missteps

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei has raised concerns about governance in Ghana. She describes a crisis marked by constitutional uncertainty and eroding public trust. The government seems to be functioning without clear direction.

During the opening of the second session of the Ninth Parliament, Ms. Appiagyei criticized national affairs. She stated that key democratic institutions are under threat. She is particularly worried about an "ongoing assault" on judicial independence.

Ms. Appiagyei pointed out recent attempts by the Executive branch to remove the Chief Justice. She also mentioned efforts to appoint politically loyal judges to the Supreme Court. These actions threaten the principle of separation of powers.

“These actions,” she said, “undermine vital checks and balances in our democracy.”

In foreign affairs, she condemned the government's decision to close Ghana’s embassy in Washington, D.C. This closure reportedly stems from corruption allegations. She called this move abrupt and reckless, warning it harms Ghana’s diplomatic standing.

The embassy holds strategic significance in the United States. Madam Appiagyei urged Parliament to summon the Minister for Foreign Affairs for clarity on this issue. “Our diplomatic credibility is not a political tool,” she emphasized.

“It must be protected with transparency and accountability.”

She concluded by urging all Members of Parliament to uphold their duty. They must safeguard national institutions and defend public interest.
