Devastating rainstorm destroys properties in Upper West

A rainstorm has caused significant damage in the Wa Municipality. This storm hit on Friday evening, April 18, 2025. It ripped off roofs, uprooted trees, and knocked down electricity poles. Many buildings were damaged across the municipality.

One of the worst-hit places was Dine in Delicacies restaurant. A large tree fell on the restaurant while it was open. Nine people were inside at the time. The owner, Hajia Latifa Ibrahim Dodoo, witnessed the incident. She said there was panic but only one person was briefly trapped and rescued unharmed.

The storm also knocked down electricity poles, leaving many areas in darkness. The SSNIT Residential Area was among those affected. Schools faced damage too; Naa Momory Technical and Vocational School suffered greatly. Vice Principal Hussein Yasir reported extensive destruction to several school buildings.

Yasir noted that the storm lasted about 15 to 16 minutes but caused heavy damage. He mentioned that their fashion department and ICT block were severely impacted. With students returning soon, he pleaded for help from local leaders and the nation.

In response to the disaster, a team from NADMO visited to assess the situation. Director Maxwell Emmanuel confirmed they had received prior warnings about a dangerous tree needing removal. Unfortunately, no action had been taken before the storm struck.

Emmanuel stated they received multiple distress calls after the storm hit other areas too. NADMO plans to work with Ghana National Fire Service for debris clearance and assessments for relief efforts. However, he admitted there are currently no relief supplies available for immediate distribution.

They will first seek support locally before contacting their national office for assistance once assessments are complete. Alhaji Issah Nura Danwanaa is the new Wa Municipal Chief Executive who arrived at the scene shortly after being confirmed in his role.

He described this event as his “baptism of fire.” He assured immediate municipal support would be provided to clear debris and secure affected premises.

Peter Lanchene Toobu, Member of Parliament for Wa West, toured devastated communities afterward. He called attention to climate change's worsening effects through this disaster.

Toobu expressed concern over NADMO’s limited resources but remained hopeful for improvements ahead.
