Digital Faceoff: Sam George clashes with X user over cost of data in Ghana

Minister Sam Nartey George recently had a heated exchange on social media. He interacted with an X user named Tech In Twi about data costs in Ghana.

The user reminded the Minister of his past comments while in opposition. They urged him to address the rising data costs for Ghanaians. The user stated, “Affordable data is the real prize. You mentioned 39% tariffs on data purchases. These tariffs were not approved by Parliament under the previous government.”

The user continued, “Removing these tariffs will lower prices immediately. Delaying action means more profit for you.” They emphasized that true victory lies in eliminating this 39%.

In response, Minister George explained he cannot remove tariffs on data charges. He stated that only the Finance Minister has that power.

He said, “I appreciate your enthusiasm but facts are facts. You correctly identified the tariffs affecting data prices. However, no Minister can remove any tax or tariff without Finance Minister approval.”

George added that tariff reductions provide significant relief but are not the only options available to him. He expressed optimism about discussions with the Finance and Energy Ministers for medium-term solutions.

The young man remained unconvinced by George's explanation. He reminded the Minister of his previous statements regarding former Communications Minister Ursula Owusu.

He said, “You’ve contradicted yourself, Hon. Sam George. In opposition, you criticized a regulatory tariff authorized by the NCA as deceptive.”

He pointed out that now in office, George claims it requires Finance Minister approval to reverse it.

The user argued that if it was a regulatory tariff approved by the NCA, then it could be reversed by policy directive from the Communications Minister without needing Parliament’s involvement.

He cited legal provisions allowing such actions and noted they could be completed quickly with political will.

The young man concluded by urging George to use the same legal path he previously claimed was used to impose those tariffs to eliminate them now.

He warned that continued silence might lead people to doubt his honesty regarding this issue.
