Digital road tolls to replace physical booths - Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to reintroduce road tolls. This will be done in a more efficient and digital way.

He spoke at the 9th Ghana CEO Summit and Awards Expo in Accra on Monday. The new system will not use physical toll booths. Instead, it will rely on technology for seamless payments.

"We have said in our manifesto that we are going to reintroduce road tolls," President Mahama stated. He mentioned discussions about the best way to implement this plan.

The president highlighted the link between vehicles and their owners' Ghana Cards. This connection allows for automated toll collection. "We don’t need old toll gates or cards anymore," he explained.

Using the East Legon bridge as an example, he proposed a simple payment model. "If it is 1 cedi each time you cross, we take a picture of your car." The bill would then be sent to your mobile money or bank account for easy payment.

"You just pay 1 cedi, only 1 cedi," he added.
