President John Dramani Mahama emphasized that diplomacy is more than conflict management. It involves fostering mutual respect, building trust, and advancing shared interests.
He spoke at the launch of ECOWAS's 50th anniversary in Ghana's capital. He stated, “Diplomacy is about fostering mutual respect and advancing our common interests.”
Mahama explained that true diplomacy creates an environment for cooperation. This includes goals related to security, trade, development, and cultural exchange.
He stressed that diplomacy should extend beyond political negotiations. “Our commitment to integration must include economic, social, and cultural dimensions,” he remarked.
This holistic approach involves harmonizing trade negotiations. It also facilitates the free movement of people and promotes cooperation in education and healthcare.
“These efforts must always focus on the welfare of citizens,” Mahama said. He asserted that diplomatic efforts should serve the people.
“Whether we are harmonizing trade or promoting education, our efforts must prioritize citizens' needs,” he stated.
Additionally, President Mahama highlighted the need for ECOWAS institutions to act quickly and transparently. “Our diplomatic efforts must empower ECOWAS to be responsive and credible,” he said.
He reminded everyone that ECOWAS should not feel distant or detached. “As citizens, we must see ECOWAS as a vibrant community that understands our struggles,” he declared.
Mahama also noted the importance of cultural diplomacy. Shared languages, music, literature, and culture are key unifying tools within ECOWAS.
“Let us never forget the power of self-diplomacy through our shared culture,” he concluded.
