Vincent Ekow Assafuah is part of the legal team for suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. He expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court's recent decision. The Court dismissed an application to stop a presidential committee investigating her possible removal.
The Chief Justice filed this injunction on May 21. She aimed to restrain a six-member committee set up by President John Mahama. She also sought to disqualify two committee members, Justices Gabriel Pwamang and Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, due to concerns about bias.
The Supreme Court made a unanimous decision to dismiss the application. A full ruling will be delivered on June 12, 2025.
On May 28, Assafuah spoke on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News. He said the legal team hoped the Court would prioritize constitutional rights. “We thought the Supreme Court would protect these rights,” he stated.
Assafuah described the ruling as troubling for those seeking justice in closed cases. He emphasized that constitutional rights should be upheld in any forum. Unfortunately, he felt the Supreme Court did not agree with this view.
He remarked that the ruling creates a concerning impression for individuals in similar situations. “If you are threatened or harmed behind closed doors, where do you go?” he asked.
Assafuah called the ruling “unfortunate” and “disappointing.” He concluded with, “What can we say?”
This decision is significant in ongoing discussions about judicial accountability and presidential powers regarding the Chief Justice's suspension.
