The medical team caring for Pope Francis considered stopping his treatment. This decision came after the 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized with a respiratory illness.

Professor Sergio Alfieri spoke to Corriere della Sera about a critical moment. On February 28, the pope had a breathing crisis and inhaled vomit.

Alfieri explained, “We had to choose whether to let him go or try everything.” They decided to continue treatment despite the risks of harming other organs.

Massimiliano Strappetti, Francis’ nurse, made the final call. He told Alfieri, “Try everything, we won’t give up.” The entire team shared this determination.

Pope Francis left the hospital on March 23 after 38 days. This was his longest hospitalization since becoming pope 12 years ago. During his stay, he faced several breathing crises that endangered his life.

The Vatican provided detailed updates about Francis’ health during this time. Alfieri stated that this transparency was the pope’s choice. The medical team prepared bulletins with input from Francis’ secretaries.

People gathered in St Peter's Square to watch Pope Francis on giant screens as he appeared from the hospital balcony. Doctors recommended he have 24-hour medical assistance upon returning home.

Francis is now at Casa Santa Marta for recovery. His treatment includes mobility and respiratory physiotherapy, especially for voice recovery.

Doctors also advised oxygen therapy and emergency support for him at home. The pope plans to gradually return to work and has shown determination in his recovery.

He has resumed some duties and signed documents but hasn’t led the Angelus prayer recently. However, he continues offering reflections each week, calling for peace in conflict areas.

In a post on X, he thanked people for their prayers and support: “Let us pray together for peace.” He specifically mentioned Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo as places needing prayers.
