Doctors at KATH suspend all surgical cases following water crisis

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have suspended all surgeries. This decision is effective immediately due to a water shortage.

A memo dated March 25, 2025, from the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association informed management of this action. The doctors believe it is necessary for patient safety and security.

The memo states that the Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorate will not admit new patients until water supply is restored. The ongoing water shortage has created severe challenges for the hospital.

The doctors emphasized that water is essential for hygiene and surgical procedures. Its scarcity compromises overall patient care.

"Despite our efforts, the lack of water has reached a critical point," said the memo. This situation threatens both patient safety and healthcare delivery.

Dr. Michael Leat, chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), apologized for any inconvenience caused by this decision. He assured that they will continue to care for existing patients.

"We request urgent intervention from management to resolve the water crisis," he added. The directors will prioritize safety and hygiene while managing current cases.

The association also called for alternative sources of water and regular updates on the situation.

Meanwhile, KATH management explained that Ghana Water Company Limited has not restored supply since last week. They are relying on alternative sources, which are insufficient for daily operations.

“Currently, we depend on our own sources and help from GNFS, KMA, and GWCL,” said the Public Relations Directorate. However, these supplies do not meet operational needs.

They are in constant contact with GWCL's regional office to expedite repairs needed to restore water supply to the hospital.
