Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, the GPRTU PRO, has given advice to passengers. He urged them not to assault drivers or their mates. This is in response to the upcoming 15% fare reduction on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
Instead of violence, passengers should report non-compliant drivers and mates to the police. Alhaji Moro stated, “Don’t beat drivers or mates if they refuse to reduce fares by 15%. Report them to the police instead.”
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) announced a fare drop of 15%. This change will take effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025. It follows successful negotiations with the Ministry of Transport.
The fare reduction reflects the cedi's appreciation against the US dollar. This has led to a significant drop in fuel prices. Abass Imoro from GPRTU confirmed this agreement during an interview with CITI NEWS.
He mentioned that spare parts sellers promised some price reductions but these have not yet happened. Currently, prices for lubricants remain unchanged despite previous increases.
Meanwhile, spare parts dealers at Abossey Okai are resisting calls for price cuts. They argue that their current stock was bought at higher exchange rates. Reducing prices now would be economically unfeasible for them.
One dealer explained that they must sell existing stock before lowering prices. Another added that they cannot reduce prices without incurring losses. They will consider price reductions only when new orders reflect lower rates.
In summary, while transport fares will decrease by 15%, spare parts prices may not follow suit immediately.
