Don’t blame the IMF for your tariff Increments – Kofi Tonto Chides Government

Kofi Tonto, a political aide to former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, criticized the current government. He accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of misleading Ghanaians about electricity tariff increases.

Tonto stated that these increases are not mandated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He explained that while the IMF suggests reviewing tariffs, it does not require mandatory hikes. The government has full control over tariff adjustments.

“Do not let anyone tell you that IMF adjustments mean increases,” he said. He emphasized that the IMF's review call aims for realistic and sustainable tariffs.

He pointed out that during the first quarter of 2024, the previous NPP-led administration did not raise electricity tariffs. In fact, they reduced tariffs for both residential and non-residential consumers. Water tariffs also remained unchanged.

Tonto refuted claims that the IMF imposes harsh tariff increases. He referenced a precedent from 2018 when Akufo-Addo decreased tariffs by 17.5% under an IMF program. “The evidence doesn’t support claims that the IMF only demands increases,” he added.

He compared the NPP’s approach to recent NDC adjustments. The NPP raised overall tariffs by 6.47% for 2024, while the NDC increased them by 14.75%.

Tonto urged people to examine facts and avoid political rhetoric blaming external partners for local decisions. “There is science behind tariff reviews,” he noted, “but we must apply a human face to decisions.” He concluded by stating this is what the NPP demonstrated and should continue to do.
