Economist and Professor Godfred Bokpin has urged President John Dramani Mahama to make bold decisions. He believes these choices may not be popular now but will benefit Ghana's future.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Prof. Bokpin noted that Mahama has a unique chance for broad support. He emphasized that this opportunity should not be wasted on short-term popularity.
Prof. Bokpin compared Mahama’s current term to his first. He stated that during 2012 to 2016, the president struggled to govern effectively. Now, he sees a more supportive political climate.
The professor encouraged Mahama to focus on medium- and long-term policies. These policies may be challenging but are essential for Ghana's survival and prosperity.
He stressed that the president should avoid only making populist decisions. Instead, he should consider painful choices that ensure long-term benefits. This approach will shape how history remembers him.
Prof. Bokpin also drew parallels with Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He pointed out that Nkrumah faced unpopularity for his visionary plans. While people sought immediate comforts, Nkrumah focused on Ghana's future over the next century.
