Don’t politicise the cedi’s gains – Attah Issah challenges Bawumia’s claims

Member of Parliament Attah Issah from Sagnarigu has responded to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Bawumia seemed to downplay the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s role in Ghana’s currency recovery.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Issah called Bawumia's comments opportunistic. He criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for claiming sole credit for the cedi’s appreciation.

Issah stated, “Politicizing this discussion isn’t worth it.” He noted that economic policies led to an exchange rate of GHC16. He emphasized that the outcome of the 2024 election is more important.

He accused the NPP of only taking responsibility when the economy is doing well. “They never take responsibility when things are bad,” he said about their approach.

Issah also highlighted the previous NDC administration's role in stabilizing Ghana’s economy. He mentioned their effective management of the country’s debt burden.

He acknowledged the importance of the debt restructuring program by the previous government. This program helped meet IMF conditions and stabilize Ghana's economy.

According to Issah, successful negotiations with international creditors saved Ghana nearly $4 billion. This development eased pressure on the local currency, benefiting its value.

“Without saving that $4 billion, there would have been more pressure on the cedi,” he explained.
