Don’t rise by destroying others – Minority cautions judge over CJ role

The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns about a plan to remove Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo. They believe this scheme aims to replace her with a judge who supports the ruling NDC government.

At an emergency press conference on Wednesday, MP John Darko spoke out. He claimed there are efforts to invoke Article 146 (10)(a) of the Constitution. This article could lead to the Chief Justice's suspension under questionable reasons.

“We know plans are being made to suspend the Chief Justice,” he stated. “They want to appoint someone who is a known supporter of the NDC.”

Darko warned the unnamed judge being considered for replacement. He said seeking promotion through another's downfall would not be viewed favorably by history.

“Justice Torkonoo’s destruction should not be your path to power,” he cautioned. “If you rise on someone else's ruin, remember that posterity will judge you harshly.”

The Minority also urged Ghana’s moral and spiritual leaders to step in. They called on these leaders to advise the President before any irreversible decisions are made.

“To our traditional and religious leaders, now is the time to act,” Darko added. “We must pray for our country before it’s too late.”
