Ebbo Botwe, President of the Plastic Manufacturers Association of Ghana, has responded to President John Dramani Mahama. The President announced plans to ban Styrofoam importation and production in Ghana. He cited its significant contribution to environmental pollution.
This announcement was made on June 5 during the launch of the 2025 national tree planting exercise. This initiative aims to restore forest cover and combat climate change. The President described Styrofoam as a harmful pollutant, especially in food packaging.
On Citi Eyewitness News, Mr. Botwe acknowledged valid concerns about pollution. However, he noted that many misconceptions about Styrofoam need addressing before a ban is considered. He explained that the environmental impact of Styrofoam is often misunderstood.
Mr. Botwe stated that Styrofoam contains only 4% to 5% plastic; the rest is air. He called for a discussion on pollution that includes waste collection and recycling efforts. He emphasized public education as essential in this conversation.
He expressed the association's willingness to work with the government. However, he stressed that policy decisions must involve stakeholder engagement and data-driven assessments. This approach will help avoid unintended consequences for manufacturers, workers, and consumers.
Mr. Botwe mentioned an upcoming meeting with the Minister for Environment between June 16 and 20. They aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the plastic industry to inform future government decisions.
