Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has cautioned President John Dramani Mahama against the misuse of state security agencies to target political opponents.
His comments come after an alleged failed attempt by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to arrest the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, at his residence on Wednesday.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate political persecution,” Dr Bawumia visited the MP and later issued a statement condemning the move, which he believes is part of a growing trend of political intimidation.
“Rev. Fordjour was in high spirit and undaunted. I urge all our supporters to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in the face of this growing political intimidation,” he stated.
Dr Bawumia called on President Mahama to immediately bring his security operatives under control, stressing that the institutions of state must not be converted into tools of fear and harassment.
“Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness. The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” he warned.
He reaffirmed the NPP’s commitment to the principles of democracy, rule of law, and political tolerance, calling for unity and calm among party faithful.
