Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), has called for stricter verification of public officers' declared assets to enhance transparency.
Speaking at the National Economic Dialogue, he praised President John Mahama for publicly declaring his assets but stressed that verification by the Auditor-General is necessary to ensure accountability.
He urged all public officers to follow Mahama’s lead but questioned whether such disclosures would be accessible to citizens for scrutiny.
Beyond asset verification, Dr. Akwetey advocated for reforms to separate parliamentary and executive functions, warning that the governing party’s dominance in parliament could undermine political consensus and hinder constitutional reforms.
He emphasized that inclusive decision-making is crucial to strengthening Ghana’s democracy.
