The Alumni Group of the University of Bradford recently visited the new administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) in Accra. Mr. Paul Adjei took office in February 2025. The Ghana chapter of the alumni group officially welcomed him during this meeting.
Dr. Joseph Danquah led the delegation to meet Mr. Adjei at GETFund Secretariat. He praised Mr. Adjei's vision for enhancing transparency and accountability in scholarship awards. Dr. Danquah also highlighted plans to work with the government on a new legislative framework for GETFund.
He stated, “We have come to officially welcome you and wish you success.” Dr. Danquah introduced the University of Bradford Alumni Group, Ghana chapter, as a community supporting Ghanaian students studying in the UK.
The delegation received a warm welcome from GETFund’s secretariat, with Mr. Adjei leading handshakes and pleasantries. He expressed his delight at their visit and enthusiasm for deeper engagement between GETFund and the alumni community.
A key part of their visit was discussing a mentorship program for GETFund scholarship beneficiaries at Bradford University. This initiative was inspired by Professor Vishanth Weerakkody, who champions student development and alumni engagement.
Dr. Danquah leads this program, which offers academic and emotional support to students studying abroad. He explained that many students live independently for the first time while abroad.
“The mentorship program aims to connect every GETFund student at Bradford,” he said, emphasizing experience-sharing benefits. “We help them navigate academics and prepare them as global scholars.”
Mr. Adjei commended the alumni group's proactive approach and reaffirmed GETFund’s commitment to enhancing student experiences abroad. He praised both Professor Weerakkody's leadership and Dr. Danquah's execution of mentorship initiatives.
Mr. Adjei described mentorship as essential for transitioning from classroom to workplace smoothly, promising to explore formal support for such programs.
In November 2024, Dr. Danquah became an Academic Adviser for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission due to his dedication to education and mentorship.
Deda Ofosu Dote, Ing William Lartey Darko, Abigail Obuobi, and Papa Kwadwo Abebrese joined Dr. Danquah in sharing their readiness to collaborate with GETFund on educational forums and workshops for returning scholars.
GETFund was established by the Government of Ghana in 2000 to train talents driving socio-economic growth in the country. It has awarded thousands of scholarships across various fields like medicine, pharmacy, and engineering over the years.
Mr. Paul Adjei is expected to receive strong support from GETFund management staff as they look forward to working together under his leadership.
