Dr. Kabiru: Cedi was recovering before NPP left office

Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama is the MP for Walewale. He was also an Economic Advisor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Recently, he spoke on Channel One TV's The Point of View.

He stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not leave a depreciating currency. He dismissed claims that the cedi was in crisis before the government transition.

Dr. Abdul-Kabiru explained that currency appreciation depends on reserves and external performance. He noted that conditions can vary between administrations.

The cedi had reached GHS16 to the dollar in November 2024 but improved since then. He said, "The NPP did not hand over an unstable currency."

He acknowledged some credit for the NPP, stating the cedi appreciated from May 1 to May 20. He emphasized that it was not in crisis when handed over to the current government.

In summary, he argued that the cedi was stable and recovering before the transition.
