Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, MP for Walewale, debated Prof. Sharif Mahmud Khalid on May 22. The discussion focused on the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi. Both politicians represent different parties: NPP and NDC. They appeared on The Point of View on Channel One TV.
Dr. Mahama credited the cedi's rise to reduced public spending by the government. He mentioned delayed payments to contractors and Independent Power Producers (IPPs). These measures have lowered demand for foreign exchange, easing pressure on the cedi.
He stated, "The government has decided not to spend." He noted that statutory payments and compensations are overdue. "No contracts have been awarded," he added, emphasizing that this lack of spending helps stabilize the cedi.
In contrast, Prof. Khalid disagreed with Dr. Mahama's views. He criticized the previous Akufo-Addo administration’s economic management. He questioned the claim that there is no spending happening.
Prof. Khalid pointed out significant losses at the Bank of Ghana under the past administration. "When a finance minister presents a budget, spending starts from there," he explained. He challenged Dr. Mahama's assertion about non-spending, asking for clarification on what it means.
The debate highlighted differing perspectives on Ghana's economic situation and currency performance.
