Former NDC Flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, has called for the reintegration of traditional Chiefs into Ghana’s governance system, claiming their marginalization has contributed to rural social and economic challenges.
In his write-up “Empowering Our Chiefs,” he stresses the importance of revitalizing the chieftaincy institution for national unity and local development.
Historically central to governance, Chiefs have seen their power diminished by the 1992 Constitution.
Dr. Duffuor argues this has left communities vulnerable to issues like lawlessness and rural depopulation. He proposes allocating 20% of local revenue to Chiefs to fund development projects, boosting rural economies and infrastructure.
He also calls for legislative reforms, collaboration with other leaders, and cultural preservation to strengthen Ghana’s identity and governance.
