Dr. Kwakye rejects IMF petition over BoG Governor appointment

Dr. John Kwakye, Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), has opposed plans by Tano North MP Dr. Gideon Boako to petition the International Monetary Fund (IMF) over the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Dr. Kwakye argues that while the IMF has oversight on Ghana’s External Credit Facility (ECF), it has no authority over who leads the central bank.

His comments come amid criticisms from the Minority, who have raised concerns over the discontinuation of criminal charges against Dr. Asiama, warning that the move could harm Ghana’s international financial credibility.

In response, Dr. Kwakye questioned why the IMF was being involved, stating on X: “Why should the IMF be brought into this matter? Can’t we deal with our issues internally ourselves?”
