Dr. Sulemanu Koney retires as Ghana Chamber of Mines CEO

The Ghana Chamber of Mines announced today that Dr. Sulemanu Koney is retiring. He served as Chief Executive Officer for over two decades, including ten years in this role.

Dr. Koney became CEO in 2014. He reached the retirement age in April 2024 but agreed to stay until March 2025. His departure ends an era of visionary leadership in Ghana’s mining sector.

Dr. Koney joined the Chamber in 2000 as Director of Analysis, Research, and Finance. He rose to CEO by 2014. Under his leadership, the Chamber promoted responsible mining practices and collaboration with stakeholders.

He also advocated for policies that strengthened the mining sector's role in national development. His work advanced discussions on fiscal policy, local content, and environmental sustainability.

Mr. Michael Edem Akafia, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, praised Dr. Koney's leadership: “His dedication and vision have left a lasting impact on the Chamber and industry.” He thanked Dr. Koney for his service and wished him success in future endeavors.

Interim Leadership

Until a new CEO is appointed, Mr. Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah will serve as Acting CEO. He is currently the Chamber’s Director of External Relations and Communications.

Mr. Nantogmah has over 26 years of experience in the mining sector. He brings expertise in communications, sustainability, and stakeholder engagement to this role.

Mr. Akafia expressed confidence in Mr. Nantogmah’s leadership during this transition: “His industry knowledge makes him ideal to guide us forward.”
