Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, a senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised concerns. He is worried about the delayed impeachment proceedings against Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo. He urged President Mahama and others to speed up the process. This delay could set a dangerous precedent.
In an interview on The Forum with Asaase Radio, Samoa Addo stressed the importance of judicial accountability. He believes it should not be sacrificed for political games or slow procedures. “Once we reach prima facie, you cannot stay in office during impeachment,” he explained. Long suspensions effectively remove the person from their role.
Samoa Addo warned that this prolonged process could harm public trust. “The longer it takes, the more it seems like a strategy to keep her out,” he said. He called on President Mahama and all involved to expedite the impeachment process. “We don’t want this to drag on,” he added.
He also criticized some legal professionals who claim to represent the entire legal community without proper authority. “They think they can speak for about 8,000 of us,” he noted. Meanwhile, he praised the Bar Association's executive for their balanced statement on the matter.
