Drama at EOCO as Minority MPs sit on street to protest Wontumi’s detention

Members of Parliament from the Minority Caucus staged a sit-in on May 29. They protested outside the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra. Their demand was for the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. He is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The MPs wore black and red clothing during their protest. They marched from Parliament to EOCO's office in Accra Central. Their actions drew significant public attention and caused traffic disruptions. A heavy police presence was on-site to maintain order.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin led the protest. He criticized what he called political persecution against opponents. This sit-in followed Wontumi’s detention by EOCO after failing to meet bail conditions. He had been granted a GH₵50 million bail on May 28.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27 after being summoned by the Criminal Investigations Department. He is under investigation for alleged financial irregularities with EXIMBANK. Although EOCO granted him bail, he has not yet satisfied all conditions.

NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye condemned EOCO's politicisation. The protest heightened an already tense political atmosphere in Ghana. Many observers saw it as an unusual show of solidarity among opposition members.

EOCO has not commented on the ongoing investigation or its details. Sources suggest that complex financial transactions involving state funds may be involved. As Wontumi’s legal team works to meet bail conditions, tensions continue to rise over justice and due process in Ghana's investigative institutions.
