Driver charged with trafficking illicit ammunition in Volta region to reappear in court

Salifu Jalilu, 38, appeared in the Denu Circuit Court today. He is accused of transporting illegal ammunition from Benin to Accra.

The Volta Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Felix Danku, provided details. He said Salifu's plea was not taken during the court session.

The police requested that Salifu be remanded into custody for further investigation. Judge Joseph Ofosu-Behome agreed and ordered his remand.

Salifu is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, May 7.

Background

On April 18, police stopped a bus traveling from Benin to Accra. This occurred at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police Barrier in Akatsi North District.

During this routine check, officers found a large quantity of illegal ammunition. The seizure raised concerns about arms trafficking.

The Volta Regional Police Command reported the seized items included 60 cartons of AAA cartridges and 72 cartons of BB cartridges. In total, there were over 33,000 rounds of ammunition.

Two drivers were questioned after the incident. It was revealed that Salifu loaded the consignment without informing the second driver, Abasou Fuseini.

Salifu was arrested and taken to the Regional Police Command. Abasou was granted bail and allowed to continue driving the bus with its passengers to Accra.
