Driver granted bail for allegedly stealing a car

Court Proceedings

Nicholas Sarpong appeared in the Circuit Court at Dansoman. He is accused of stealing a Hyundai i10 taxi worth GH¢30,000.

Sarpong pleaded not guilty before Judge Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit. The court granted him bail of GH¢40,000 with two sureties. Both sureties must be justified.

Additionally, Sarpong must deposit his Ghana Card at the court registry. He is required to report to the police every two weeks until further notice.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Emelia Mensah, presented the case. Salifu Alandu, an aluminum fabricator from Fadama, is the complainant. He gave Sarpong the Hyundai i10 taxi for commercial use in September 2023.

They had a weekly sales agreement of GH¢500. On February 18, 2024, Sarpong told Alandu’s wife that the vehicle was stolen. He claimed a passenger hired him to Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital on February 16.

Sarpong alleged that he was unconscious under a mango tree when it happened. After police investigations, he was arrested and charged with theft. Sarpong insists he was deceived and did not steal the vehicle.

The prosecution has been ordered to file disclosures and witness statements before the Case Management Conference (CMC). The case has been adjourned.

Related Case

In another matter, the court struck out a theft case involving a Toyota Corolla LE valued at GH¢70,000 due to lack of prosecution.

Bright Asomaning, a 43-year-old mechanic from Awoshie, faced charges for stealing this vehicle. The charge arose from allegations that he took Kate Adio's car without her consent.

According to court documents, this incident occurred in February 2025. Adio had sent Asomaning to retrieve her vehicle for repairs from Oda to Accra.

After transporting it successfully, she asked him to find a buyer as she wanted to sell it. However, Asomaning allegedly sold the car without her permission and went into hiding.

Adio's attempts to contact him were unsuccessful. She reported the matter to police on April 16, 2025. Based on intelligence gathered by officers, they arrested Asomaning at Sowutuom.

During questioning, he admitted selling the vehicle due to financial difficulties. Despite his arrest and investigation efforts, the court struck out the case due to delays in prosecution.

Asomaning has been discharged from all charges.
