Driver granted bail for allegedly stealing a car

Court Proceedings

Nicholas Sarpong appeared in the Circuit Court at Dansoman. He is accused of stealing a Hyundai i10 taxi worth GH¢30,000.

Sarpong pleaded not guilty before Judge Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit. The court granted him bail of GH¢40,000 with two sureties. Both sureties must be justified.

Additionally, Sarpong must deposit his Ghana Card at the court registry. He is also required to report to the police every two weeks until further notice.

According to Chief Inspector Emelia Mensah, the complainant is Salifu Alandu. Alandu is an aluminum fabricator from Fadama, Accra. He gave Sarpong his Hyundai i10 taxi for commercial use in September 2023.

They had a weekly sales agreement of GH¢500. On February 18, 2024, Sarpong told Alandu's wife that the vehicle was stolen. He claimed this happened while he was at Weija-Gbawe Municipal Hospital.

Sarpong said a passenger hired him on February 16 and stole the taxi while he was unconscious under a mango tree. After police investigations, he was arrested and charged with theft.

Sarpong insists he did not steal the vehicle and claims he was deceived. The prosecution must file all disclosures and witness statements before the Case Management Conference (CMC). The case has been adjourned.

Related Case

In another matter, the court struck out a theft case involving a Toyota Corolla LE valued at GH¢70,000 due to lack of prosecution.

The accused is Bright Asomaning, a 43-year-old mechanic from Awoshie. He faced charges for allegedly stealing a vehicle owned by Kate Adio from Sowutuom.

Court documents state that in February 2025, Adio asked Asomaning to retrieve her car for repairs in Accra. After transporting it successfully, she wanted to sell it and asked him to find buyers.

However, Asomaning allegedly sold the vehicle without her consent and went into hiding. Adio could not reach him despite repeated calls and reported the matter to police on April 16, 2025.

Police arrested Asomaning based on intelligence gathered in Sowutuom. During questioning, he admitted selling the car due to financial difficulties.

Despite his arrest and investigation results, the court struck out the case because prosecutors failed to act promptly. Asomaning has been discharged from all charges.
