Drivers have not defied fare reduction directive – Abass Imoro

Alhaji Abass Imoro is the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). He has denied reports that commercial drivers are refusing to implement a 15% fare reduction. This announcement was recently made by the union.

His comments came after Channel One News visited transport terminals in Ashanti and Greater Accra Regions. Many drivers were still charging old fares during this visit. Only a few had complied with the new fare directive. Some drivers said they would start implementing the cut from Monday, May 26.

Despite mixed compliance, Alhaji Imoro claimed many drivers have responded positively. He attributed public perception of defiance to a small number of non-compliant drivers. On Citi Eyewitness News, he noted that some passengers experienced reduced fares while others had not yet.

"The drivers are not defying the directive," he stated. He acknowledged that some passengers reported different experiences but emphasized it did not indicate widespread refusal to comply.

He recognized a few uncooperative drivers but stressed their actions were unjustified. "There are a few recalcitrants who have decided not to comply," he said. He pointed out that these drivers quickly accept fare increases but resist reductions.

Alhaji Imoro urged all drivers to respect the union’s decision and follow the law. He warned that failure to comply could lead to consequences. "We will plead with them to rescind their decision," he concluded.

The 15% fare reduction was introduced due to the appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and falling fuel prices. This move aims to ease financial burdens on commuters.
