Drivers on Ho-Aflao, Akatsi routes resist fare reduction citing poor roads

Drivers from the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) are refusing to lower lorry fares. They operate on the Ho-Aflao, Akatsi, and Keta routes. They cite poor road conditions as the reason for their decision.

This refusal contrasts with drivers at the Ho Main Station. Those drivers have complied with the nationwide fare reduction directive.

Mr. Gabriel Fiankor, the station manager, spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA). He explained that bad roads increase vehicle wear and tear. This also raises maintenance and spare parts costs for drivers.

Although fares have not been reduced yet, discussions are ongoing. The station leadership is trying to find a compromise for commuters. “We have initiated several meetings with the drivers,” he said.

The goal is to reach an understanding that helps both passengers and drivers. Mr. Fiankor believes they will find a resolution soon.

Some drivers told GNA they cannot absorb losses from fare reductions. They need a significant drop in spare parts costs first.

Passengers expressed frustration over this situation. Many feel they must pay current charges despite the nationwide fare reduction. “We don’t have any other options,” one passenger said.

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) implemented a 15 percent fare reduction on May 24. This followed a drop in fuel prices due to the cedi's appreciation against foreign currencies.

While many passengers welcome these reductions, frustration remains high among those affected by delays in implementation.
