Drivers suspend nationwide strike following Govt assurances to decongest

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have suspended their planned strike. The strike was set to start on Monday, May 19, 2025. It aimed to protest the government's failure to enforce the Road Traffic Regulations Act 2012. This law prohibits street trading on roads, pavements, and at bus stops.

After a meeting with the Minister for Transport, both groups agreed to pause their action. They will wait for the government to fulfill its promises. David Agboado, the National Public Relations Officer for the Concerned Drivers Association, spoke to Citi News about this decision. He warned that if enforcement measures are not maintained, they might reinstate the strike.

Agboado cautioned the Mayor against temporary solutions. He said that if traders return after being cleared, they will stop working again. "We have suspended the strike action," he stated, "but we can still strike."

Meanwhile, GPRTU’s Industrial Relations Officer Abass Imoro confirmed another meeting tomorrow. This meeting will discuss a possible reduction in transport fares due to the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi. Imoro described their previous meeting as lengthy and productive.

He mentioned that both sides are negotiating percentages for fare adjustments. They reached a preliminary agreement but need further discussion tomorrow. Imoro assured the public that they aim to provide a fare reduction soon.
