Drumming and noise banned in Accra as Homowo preparations begin

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started its annual ban on drumming and noise-making. This ban is effective from Monday, May 12, 2025, to Wednesday, June 12, 2025. It is part of the preparations for the Homowo Festival.

Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, announced the directive. The ban applies to communities within the Assembly’s jurisdiction. This includes Gamashie, Ablekuma West, parts of Kasoa, and areas near the AMA Head Office.

The ban is a “sacred period of solemnity and reflection.” It is a long-standing tradition before the Homowo Festival. This festival is one of the most important cultural events for the Ga people.

During this time, churches can hold services only indoors. They cannot use musical instruments or loudspeakers. Sound systems are also banned in places of worship and public events.

The Ga Traditional Council (GTC) works with the AMA to enforce this directive. They have suspended all funeral-related activities during the ban.

The AMA emphasizes that these restrictions are vital for peace and safety. They aim to maintain harmony during this culturally significant period.

Residents are urged to show restraint and avoid disrespectful comments. The statement calls for mutual respect among all religious and ethnic groups.

The Homowo Festival celebrates a time of famine and triumph over hunger for the Ga people. The silence leading up to it holds cultural and religious importance.
