Abraham Amaliba, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), defended President John Dramani Mahama's decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo. He assured the public that due process is being followed.
Amaliba spoke on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, April 26. He said, “The suspended Chief Justice still has an opportunity to come back if she can exonerate herself.” He emphasized that the President is adhering to due process.
His comments come amid debates about the suspension. Critics are concerned about judicial independence and political interference.
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has also responded. They called for a process based on constitutional principles and fairness.
In a statement released Thursday, GBA leaders Mrs. Efua Ghartey and Kwaku Gyau Baffour highlighted the importance of respecting the Rule of Law.
They noted Article 146 (8), (9), and (10). This article states that Committee sittings shall be in camera. It also mentions that the President may suspend the Chief Justice with advice from the Council of State.
The GBA stressed that while Article 146 outlines removal procedures, it is vital for these processes to be just and constitutionally sound.
They acknowledged that this matter is currently sub judice. The GBA hopes all involved will uphold the Rule of Law during this process.
