The Minority in Parliament has linked the recent fire at Adum Market to erratic power supply, known as ‘dumsor.’ They addressed this issue in Parliament on Monday, March 24. They believe the fire was caused by power fluctuations.
A Minority MP shared insights from traders and eyewitnesses. He stated that the fire was allegedly triggered by dumsor. Power had been out, and when it returned, it sparked the blaze. He called this situation unfortunate for the nation.
Concerns were raised about the Ghana National Fire Service's challenges in controlling the fire. Reports indicated that they struggled due to a lack of nearby fire hydrants. Major logistical constraints also hindered their efforts.
The market's congested nature worsened the situation. The absence of modern firefighting infrastructure made it hard for firefighters to contain the blaze.
In response, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor urged caution against speculation. He emphasized that a thorough investigation is necessary to determine the cause of the fire.
He noted that while people can speculate on radio, facts are essential in Parliament. If members claim someone deliberately set the fire, it could lead to chaos. He stressed that focus should be on providing relief to affected traders.
