President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana's energy sector. He aims to address its crippling debt, which has reached GH¢80 billion.
Speaking at the Africa CEO Summit in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, he expressed concern about the sector's state. Upon returning to office, he found it severely distressed.
“The energy sector has been our top priority,” he stated. He noted that when he returned, there was a debt of almost $2.5 billion owed to Independent Power Producers and gas suppliers.
President Mahama recognized that these challenges began under the previous administration. However, his government is working to restructure and settle the debts.
“We are continuing what the previous government started,” he said. They are renegotiating the debt and developing strategies to manage it.
He assured that concrete actions are underway to relieve financial pressures in the sector. A clear timeline for results is also in place.
“By the end of this year or early next year, we aim to resolve this debt,” he added.
