Dumsor levy 8 times the E-levy – Dr Bawumia fires NDC gov’t

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president, criticized the NDC government. He is also the NPP presidential candidate for the 2024 election. Bawumia accused them of introducing a dumsor levy that is eight times the e-levy.

He explained that when you send GHC 1,000 via mobile money, you pay GHC 10 in e-levy. However, for GHC 1,000 worth of fuel, you now pay GHC 83 in new taxes.

During his NPP Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia said, “The NDC told many lies.” He noted that people are realizing these lies now. He mentioned that they promised to scrap the e-levy but instead introduced a much higher dumsor levy.

Bawumia added that if you buy one liter of petrol, it costs GHC 1. For GHC 1,000 worth of fuel, you will pay GHC 83 in taxes. He warned that more taxes are likely coming before 2028.

In response, John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister of Energy and Green Transition, clarified the purpose of the new Energy Sector Levy. He stated it is not meant to cover legacy debts but to fund liquid fuel purchases.

Jinapor explained that liquid fuel costs are not included in electricity tariffs. This creates financing challenges for the government. In an interview on JOY FM, he emphasized that governance involves making tough decisions.

He said nobody enjoys imposing taxes or levies on citizens. Jinapor assured listeners they have studied the energy sector thoroughly and understand its needs.

He noted it takes about 18 months to two years to establish gas infrastructure. The finance minister has been trying to help procure liquid fuels despite difficulties.

Jinapor concluded by discussing options available: increasing electricity tariffs or sharing gains from reduced fuel prices.
