Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He calls their actions a "grand deception." He accuses them of introducing a “dumsor levy” that is much more expensive than the E-Levy.
Bawumia spoke during a community engagement event. He said, “The NDC has told a lot of lies.” He added, “Everyone sees their lies every day.” He pointed out the introduction of the dumsor levy.
This levy was passed by Parliament on June 2, 2025. It imposes a GH¢1 charge on every litre of fuel purchased. Bawumia compared this to the E-Levy, which the NDC campaigned against and scrapped after taking power.
He explained further: “They said they would scrap the E-Levy our government introduced.” He noted that they have deceived Ghanaians with the new dumsor levy. This new levy is eight times higher than the E-Levy.
Bawumia broke down the costs for Ghanaians. “With the dumsor levy, they are charging 1 cedi on every liter of fuel,” he said. If you buy 1000 cedis worth of fuel, you will pay 83 cedis in tax. In contrast, with the E-Levy, sending 1000 cedis cost only 10 cedis in tax.
His comments have sparked renewed debate about taxation and fuel prices in Ghana. Many citizens are still feeling economic pressures from rising costs. Critics argue that this new burden falls heavily on struggling citizens again.
